genre: parody, humor
Audience: Makes fun of 'snuggie' consumers of all ages, though it is intended to provide humor for younger audiences (teens-20's) who can relate to the absurdity of this advertisement.
Purpose: exemplifying the lengths advertisers go through in order to sell their products.
Stance: The parody criticizes the creators of Snuggie for selling an ordinary blanket with sleeves for $60 when it clearly looks awkward and bizarre. The parody is made humorous by the exaggerations: collegehumor claims snuggie will make you socially awkward, disrupt your sex life, and give you herpes. They even relabel it the "WTF blanket."
Effectiveness: I think the parody is pretty effective- it uses humor and sarcasm to relay the truth to a
audiences= Don't fall for ridiculous infomercials.

ReplyDeletePathos: This video definitely stirs our emotions, most likely because we can relate to the video. Upon watching the actual Snuggie commercial, viewers most likely found this commercial to be cheap and ridiculous. Collegehumor plays upon this well-known fact to create the ‘what the fuck blanket.’
ReplyDeleteThe cheery, background piano music is the same as the music played in the actual commercial, which makes the satire even more humorous. The hilarity of the parody is most apparent when the speaker cuts the music near the end of the video when the useless complementary flashlight is introduced. The parody also mocks the dad as he wears his Snuggie by playing sensual music to emphasize how absurd and creepy one would have to be to buy this ‘backwards robe’ in the first place.
The editing is done flawlessly: The lighting in the beginning of the video is blue and the set, mundane, as the announcer describes the problems that one runs into with an ordinary blanket. However, the screen immediately turns bright and golden as soon as the Snuggie is introduced. Even the cheery music is cued as the announcer ‘praises’ the snuggie/What the fuck? blanket.
Ethos: the commercial runs as it ordinarily would on television, except Collegehumor talks over what is actually going on. The announcer speaks like an ordinary infomerical announcer would, except he brutally demoralizes the ridiculous blanket with crude language and harsh criticism.
The video is made even more comedic when the announcer describes the ‘symptoms and side effects’ of the blanket (usually found at the end of tv drug commercials), claiming it is responsible for causing stds and social awkwardness. The announcer’s tone is mocking, as he harshly judges the creators of Snuggie, as well as audiences who fall for the gimmick. The appeal as that this product is definitely non-ethical.
Logos: Collegehumor specifically points out that consumers have paid as much as $60 for the blanket, proving to audiences just how futile this large piece of fabric is. The video is meant to encourage audiences to NOT waste one’s money on the product. Hence it’s new name, “the what the fuck? Blanket.” Other logical appeals are that the Snuggie serves the exact same purpose as an ordinary blanket, and looks twice as ridiculous. Collegehumor is stating that the only people who should buy this product are those who find blankets confusing and difficult to wear….meaning absolutely no one. Just as Collegehumor’s tag line states, the creators of Snuggie should really “just…give up.”
